Anky van Grunsven was born in Erp, The Netherlands on Jan. 2, 1968. She got her first mount, a Shetland pony named “Heleentje” when she was aged six and although she persisted in pursuing a riding career it was not until 1990 that it paid off when she won the Dutch championships for the first of nine Dutch titles on Bonfire.


She demonstrated her prowess in the musical freestyle by becoming world champion at The Hague in 1994. She has won the World Cup Final nine times. On Bonfire, she won her first of three individual Olympic gold medal in Sydney in 2000, a second gold at Athens in 2004 on Salinero and a third gold, also on Salinero, in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Anky on IPS Painted Black won the inaugural Exquis World Dressage Masters Grand Prix Freestyle at Palm Beach in 2009, and the WDM at Cannes on the French Riviera. After the Athens Olympics, Anky and her trainer and partner, Sjef Janssen,had a son, Yannick. Anky and Sjef married during the World Cup Final in Las Vegas in 2005. She gave birth to a daughter, Ava Eden, in 2007.
